Police in New Canaan, Connecticut, say a 20-year-old man called 911 from a Gerdes Road residence and admitted to killing his mother — moments after officers were dispatched to the area for reports of a man yelling in the woods.
According to authorities, the caller was identified as Sebastian Van Stockum, 20. Responding officers found a woman unresponsive inside the home and attempted life-saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators described the case as domestic-related and said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Van Stockum was arrested and charged with murder. He is being held on a $2 million bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Police said further details — including the victim’s identity and cause of death — would be released as the investigation progresses and next of kin are notified.
Neighbors described the tree-lined stretch near South Avenue and Gerdes Road as typically quiet, with weekend foot traffic and families headed to nearby parks. The sudden police presence, they said, shattered an otherwise calm evening.
Detectives from New Canaan Police, working with state authorities, are continuing to process evidence and review the sequence of events that began with the woods disturbance call and ended with a 911 confession. Officials emphasized that any additional updates will come through formal releases as the case moves through court.
