A Maryland court has handed an 80-year prison sentence to a 17-year-old after he fatally shot his 15-year-old classmate inside a high-school bathroom in late 2023. The sentence marks one of the most severe for a juvenile offender in the state for an on-campus shooting.

According to court records, the shooting occurred on November 15, 2023, at Montgomery County’s Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda. The defendant, identified as Jonathan “Jonny” Miller, allegedly drew a semi-automatic pistol from his backpack during a hallway altercation, chased the victim into a bathroom, and fired multiple rounds, killing him on the spot. (Prosecutors declined to name the victim publicly due to state law.)

During the sentencing hearing, attorneys for the victim’s family described the corridor as having become a “crime scene in the heart of school,” with students fleeing and teachers shielding others in fear. The judge cited the “brutality” and “betrayal of trust” when handing down the decades-long sentence, rejecting pleas for a lesser term.

Defense lawyers argued that Miller had no prior criminal record, was facing bullying and mental-health issues, and that the state’s juvenile rehabilitation model might offer a path forward if a shorter sentence were given. The court refused, noting the victim’s right to a safe school environment and the chilling effect the crime had across the district.

The case has renewed debate in Maryland around school-security funding, student-mental-health services and the role of campus police. Education officials said they will review bathroom access policies and upgrade surveillance systems after the incident and sentence. While the family of the 15-year-old expressed relief, they also called for vigilance and community action to prevent such tragedies moving forward.
