The Best Friend

A distressed woman looking at a DNA test report after giving birth as a surrogate. The truth she carried.

My Best Friend Begged Me to Be Her Surrogate, But the DNA Test Revealed a Lie That Stole My Baby

Lila and Chloe had been inseparable since primary school—a bond forged in shared secrets and mutual support. When Chloe and her husband, Mark, faced the devastating news that Chloe could not carry a child, Lila, without hesitation, offered to be their surrogate. It was an act of profound, selfless love, a way to give her best friend the one thing she desperately wanted. The IVF procedure was successful on the first attempt. For nine months, Lila nurtured the life growing inside her, a precious cargo for the couple she adored.

The pregnancy was smooth, filled with the usual joys of anticipation, but marked by an unusual, growing tension from Chloe. Chloe began to distance herself, her constant calls and check-ins slowly replaced by short, clipped texts. She grew aggressively proprietary, demanding Lila follow a stricter, almost restrictive regime, dismissing Lila’s feelings about the baby with a cold, biological precision: “It’s our baby, Lila. You’re just the vessel.”

The conflict escalated after the birth of the beautiful baby girl, Ella. Legally, the child belonged to Chloe and Mark. But the emotional separation was impossible for Lila. She requested one final reassurance: a routine, non-legal DNA test to confirm the biological parentage before officially handing over the child. It was a common, if highly sensitive, procedure in modern surrogacy.

The results, delivered in a clinical, colourless report, detonated Lila’s world. The baby was biologically Mark’s—that was expected. But the mitochondrial DNA, passed down exclusively through the mother, did not match Chloe’s DNA. It didn’t match the donor Chloe claimed to have used either. In a sickening rush, Lila realised the impossible truth. Her best friend hadn’t used a random donor egg; she had engineered the whole process to cover a much darker secret.

After a desperate, tearful confrontation, Chloe’s confession unravelled the shocking scheme. Years earlier, Chloe had discovered Mark had an affair with a colleague. To save the marriage, she demanded that the affair’s secret, accidental baby be born and handed over to them. The “surrogacy” was a grotesque cover, a way to introduce Mark’s biological child from another woman into their home, using Lila’s compassion and body to maintain the fiction that this was an IVF miracle, not a secret child of infidelity. Lila had carried her best friend’s husband’s love child, believing she was giving a gift, only to realise she was an unwitting accessory to the greatest lie of their lives. She had lost not just a baby, but her best friend and her trust in everything.
